Chapter Thirteen

Fin

As I come to my senses, pain surges through my entire frame, radiating from my middle back and reminding me of the projectile that pierced my skin.

Fuck!

I have to get back. Shayla could be in danger, and I’ve left her there.

I try to move, but my body feels heavy and weak. It takes a moment for me to remember everything that happened. Shayla insisted I help the others instead of staying by her side.

That was a mistake I’ll never repeat. She’s my future, and without her, life will have no meaning.

Stretching my arms up slowly, I test the wound. It must have been serious if my body decided to phase into my dimension to heal. I’m grateful that my kind has this ability, but it doesn’t make the wound any less painful.

The skin pulls, shooting a flare of pain through my body. I need to lie still and let the process continue.

I take a deep breath and try to focus and gather my thoughts. My nerves prickle with unease, knowing I need to get back to Shayla, to protect her from whatever danger she may be in. But right now, all I can do is hope that my Sinth brethren take care of her.

I can’t help but feel frustrated this happened, acknowledging it’s not practical to be with her all the time. I should be, though.

She’s mine.

This has been a good wake up call. Life is too short to wait.

I could be killed tomorrow by the Taxin—or any other marauding alien species. I’ve been given a gift I never thought possible. A mate.

Now I just need to tell her.

As I begin to sit up, a wave of dizziness washes over me. I close my eyes, taking a moment to regain my balance. The last thing I need is to collapse and be unable to help Shayla if she needs me.

Once I feel steady, I open my eyes again and throw my legs toward the edge of the bed, determined to find Shayla and make sure she’s alright. My back screams in protest as I roll up to sitting.

I groan as I slowly peel off my sticky shirt. The fabric clings to my sensitive skin where the wound throbs. The pain is excruciating, but I try not to let it slow me. I know I need to act quickly and get my body healed.

Nobody can come find me. Even with the new Ashen technology. I glance down at the thin metal encircling my wrist they call a vibrational accelerator. But no one can come here. They have no way to help me or check on me.

I’ve never brought anyone here. Except Shayla.

I’ll change that immediately.

I remove the rest of my clothing, tossing it to the floor and hobbling over to the washroom. “Activate rainfall spray with one percent disinfectant.”

I step carefully into the shower. The water is the perfect temperature, but I barely feel it as I focus on the sting of my wound. Surely it’s closed by now? Just
